March 2020 to now has been a nightmare of a time. With the Covid-19 pandemic raging in the USA, and in other parts of the world, this has disrupted travel, the economy, and just everyday life. Wearing masks has become the norm. Terms like “social distance” have become part of the lexicon. Many places have become more affected than others.
The map above involves the number of Covid-19 deaths per 100,000. This map was created using Microsoft Excel. The data collected came from the Center of Disease Control, located in Atlanta, GA, USA. According to this map, the states that have seen the most deaths per capita thus far include New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Illinois, Michigan, and Louisiana. This includes all Covid-19 deaths from March 2020 until now. Cities like New York City, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and New Orleans have been hit hard. New York City and the Boston area have high population densities, as well as being major tourist destinations. New Orleans too. Many who have died include the elderly, and people with health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Per capita, more African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics are dying from Covid-19 than anyone else. This is a factor for the large number of Covid-19 deaths in Michigan, Louisiana, and Illinois. New York as well. Mississippi, next door to Louisiana, is not a highly urbanized state, and has a high rate of Covid-19 deaths, but that is a story all on its own. Another factor includes many people refusing to wear masks to combat the spread of the disease.
The map above tells of the total deaths per capita. However, it doesn’t tell the whole story.
This map tells another story. It shows where new cases have taken place. As a response to Covid-19, many states have taken rigorous measures, which include shutting down bars, beaches, and other places where large crowds would gather. States such as New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut were among the worst hit places, according to the first map shown. Those states were the first states to be hit very hard, as the East Coast of the USA was hit first by Covid-19.
However, those particular states haven’t had as many new cases come up. Those states have taken measures to slow down the number of cases. States like Washington and Oregon aren’t seeing many new cases or more deaths. Seattle was hit hard by Covid-19, but not before New York was hit. However, there are fewer new cases.
However, states like Arizona, Georgia, Texas, and Florida have been hit quite hard by new cases of Covid-19. These states have had relatively lax measures in terms of slowing down Covid-19. Idaho has been hit hard by new cases, as it had advanced on its re-opening process earlier than necessary.
The USA has been hard by Covid-19. However, many places are being hit harder than others, for different reasons.
